A Book With a Challenge

Posted by caledoniancraig on March 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM Comments comments (0)

As you will know by now I am well into the writing of my fifth On the Buses book. The writing began on my latest project at the end of 2016 and will be a review of every episode and spin-off film of On the Buses and it is proving to be an interesting challenge. The challenge is in structuring the reviews properly and I am sure that I will re-visit the structure of the reviews and their contents on several occasions and maybe on a bigger scale once the full manuscript has been completed.

At present I can't see the book which is called Hold Very Tight Please being completed until sometime in 2018 so a good deal of writing, counter-balancing that with my full-time job as Sleeper Host aboard The Caledonian Sleeper lies ahead. Well that ends this blog and I hope to blog again soon.

A New Chapter Begins

Well the last month or two has been very busy for me as I completed a move from London back home to Edinburgh so everything else in my life pretty much took a backseat. With the move now complete it means the opening of a new chaper in my life but hopefully my writing will continue.

With On the Buses: The Filming Locations now in publication for five months my mind starts to wander to my next writing project and when this will begin. I have always held the philosophy that I will only write about subjects I have a passion for and I don't see that changing. Watch this website for announcements on that front which could come before the end of the year.

For now it is back to getting my new flat in order and settling in.

Eve of Book Launch Message

Posted by caledoniancraig on May 13, 2016 at 7:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Well tomorrow is the big day - the event to launch my latest book On the Buses: The Filming Locations.. I hope those of you attending enjoy the day and, of course, the book. If you are in no rush tomorrow afternoon then after the launch I will be more than happy to tale you on a walking tour of filming locations that feature in the book that are within a reasonable walking distance from the event venue.

The event itself will see me talk in depth about the book before opening the floor to the guests for questions about the book. Thereafter I will be signing and selling the first copies of the book a day before they go on general sale.

It should be a great day and hope there is a good turn out in what is not only a proud day for me but also a proud day for the family's publishing company Caledonian Books LTD. I will close now but watch this website for photos and videos of the event and a full report as to how I felt the day went.

The Final Countdown

Well we are now just a few days away from the book launch of On the Buses: The Filming Locations. After around 18 months of research, reconnaissance, writing and photography the big day has almost arrived. I now await the delivery of books that I will have at the book launch event on Saturday - the last nervous obstacle to overcome.

According to early reports and orders sales look likely to surpass An A To Z of On the Buses pretty quickly and already my thoughts are on arranging book signings where and when I can. With a radio interview also lined up for Thursday the book plugging season is well underway.

Hopefully, people will use the book in various ways as that is how I have been marketing it. First and foremost it is a book to read and learn about the many filming locations that On the Buses used. Secondly, it can be used as a travel companion to help you visit these locations and sample the nostalgia for yourselves. Thirdly, it can be used to encourage the reader to become a location hunter and detective with hints as to where locations unfound may be located.

Well I shall close now and the countdown goes on .....

The Book Launch Nears

Well today I visited the venue that will stage the book launch event for On the Buses: The Filming Locations on Saturday the 14th of May 2016. All plans on that front have now been put in place and hopefully many people will attend.

Sadly, on my return back from the event venue today I could no longer see a structure seen in Mutiny on the Buses. Sadly, the big gas cylinders seen with a police car parked beside them have now been removed as the land continues to be cleared to make way for more housing. Another piece of history sadly gone.

As summer nears I hope the lovely weather London has had over the last few days is the sign of things to come. Sunny weather for the book launch event would be ideal as I do plan to offer those attending the chance to go on a walking tour of filming locations seen in the On the Buses films. Also with the annual On the Buses event just seven weeks away that weekend of events always goes down especially well with fine summer weather.

Well I will close now and the next blog will be my last before On the Buses: The Filming Locations hits the bookstores.

The Final Hurdle

Well around a year and a half after beginning the project I have one final hurdle to overcome. I await the delivery of the sample copy of On the Buses: The Filming Locations and if I am happy with it then it will be passed to go to print and all systems will be go for the book's launch.

The book launch event will be held on Saturday the 14th of May 2016 at Venue 96, Shenley Road in Borehamwood. The venue is situated on a street where many of the scenes from the On the Buses spin-off films were filmed so it is quite apt and hopefully will strike the right atmosphere. Admission will be free with refreshments on sale at the venue outside the Main Hall where the launch will be held.

On a personal note I have a nasty feeling my knee injury that laid me low around this time last year feels like it is returning to haunt me. I hope I am wrong but time will tell. Well I will sign off now and continue my vigil for my sample copy. Speak soon.

The Waiting Game

As On the Buses: The Filming Locations undergoes copy editing and the book cover is in the process of being designed I am now playing the waiting game.

The appendix of the book (the final section) has been by far the most troublesome and hopefully issues can be resolved without the need for too much needing to be edited out. The main body of the book containing the locations and their photographs have passed the copy editing stage which is great and the blog that will appear on the back cover has been completed. In the next few days I hope to receive suggestions for the book cover along the lines of the design I passed on so I await the cover designer's efforts.

As soon as a publication date has been given I will then look to book a venue for a book launch event but in the mean time the waiting games goes on. My next blog may contain exciting news though so watch this space.

Goodbye to a Legend - Hello to a New Book

Well this week saw another comedy legend sadly pass away. Ronnie Corbett, like me, born in Edinburgh passed away at the age of 85 after a battle with motor neurone disease. Ronnie was one part of perhaps the greatest British comedy double act of all-time - The Two Ronnies and starred in his own sitcom, Sorry. He will be greatly missed and is a sad loss to the entertainment industry.

On a brighter note, On the Buses: The Filming Locations is now going through the copy editing stage now and the cover designer is working on the cover with ideas passed on by me for it. At the current rate this phase is moving at the book may well be ready to hit the bookshops in the next two months. With things moving so swiftly I am now weighing up potential venues to hold a book launch event and hope that it can be attended by a lot of fans and maybe even the odd celebrity.

Well I will close for now and watch this space for the latest news on my upcoming fourth book and my next blog.

Mixed Easter Feelings

Well Easter is here and it brings mixed feelings for me on Good Friday.

The good is the knowledge that my fourth book is now entering the embyonic stage of the publishing process. After the Easter break things should start to move pretty quickly with the book perhaps being published sometime in May. It holds extra excitement as it will be published under the Caledonian Books LTD imprint run by myself and my sister Caroline so it will bring an extra sense of achievement.

On a sadder note it has come to my attention today that Fountain Studios in Wembley have been purchased by a property developer for £16 million and are earmarked to be demolished possibly in 2017. This is sad as these studios were once the home of LWT and On the Buses episodes from series one to series six were filmed here. The studios have been in existence since 1927 and it would seem that ninety years of history will be erased. A peyition was started to save the studios in January with 500 signatures being obtained - hopefully the efforts to save the studios can gain momentum.

Well on that note have a lovely Easter and I will close for now.

A Big Week Lies Ahead

This week I have a week off work so no more night trips to Scotland and back but things will be very busy for me on the book writing front.

I hope to complete a deal with Studio Canal Plus for clearance to use their images in my book. I am also in discussion wih Rex Features and hopefully things can be tied up on this front in the coming week.

Wednesday will be a big day as I travel up to Oxford to discuss the possible publication of On the Buses: The Filming Locations. If terms are agreeable to both it will see my fourth book move very close to entering the publication process.

It is at this time my mind also drifts towards the possibility of hosting a book launch event but, of course, that would depend on a few things. I would need to be satisfied enough people would be interested in attending and that I could find a venue that would suit such an event and have some form of connection to On the Buses would be favourable.

Well by this time next week things could be a lot clearer on multiple fronts. Watch this website for all the latest breaking news and will sign off for now.
